Meet John Henry, a self-taught contemporary artist from Westerhall, St. David, Grenada, whose creative journey began at just 12 years old.

Known for his vibrant paintings, expressive portraits and captivating landscapes, John draws inspiration from Grenada’s people, traditions, natural surroundings and everyday island life.

His work combines colour, emotion and storytelling, celebrating the distinctive character of Caribbean culture.

From Portraits to Caribbean Surrealism

Working primarily with acrylics and oils, John creates portraits, landscapes and still-life paintings. His artistic interests also extend to charcoal drawing, sculpture and woodcarving.

Grenada’s rich cultural traditions are a recurring inspiration, particularly the energy and symbolism of Spicemas and J’Ouvert.

Through his Jab Jab paintings, John captures the movement, atmosphere and cultural significance of Grenada’s carnival celebrations.

Representing Grenadian Art Internationally

In 2025, John achieved an important milestone when he was named Artist-in-Residence at the Embassy of Grenada in Washington, DC.

His artwork has also appeared in local exhibitions and cultural events, including the Grenada Contemporary Art Show, helping introduce audiences to the diversity of contemporary Grenadian art.

Sharing His Creativity

Alongside his artistic practice, John works as an art educator, sharing his knowledge and encouraging emerging artists to explore their creativity.

His talents also extend to photography and videography, allowing him to capture Grenadian life through different visual mediums.
