Why Your Local Business Needs to Be Reachable Online: Lessons from My Own Experience

As someone passionate about supporting Grenadian and other local businesses, I spend a lot of time browsing social media in search of unique, handmade products and services. But there’s one recurring frustration: so many small businesses make it nearly impossible to actually get in touch!
The Missing Link: Contact Information
You’d be surprised how many local businesses have beautiful Instagram or Facebook pages, but forget the basics—like adding a phone number, email, or even a physical location to their profile. Sometimes, there’s not even a link to a website or shop. As a customer, it’s disheartening to fall in love with a product online and then have no idea how to order it.
The Silence is Deafening: Unanswered Messages
Another common issue is slow (or non-existent) replies to messages and comments. I can’t count the number of times I’ve messaged a business with a simple question—sometimes even just “How can I buy this?”—and received no reply at all. In today’s world, social media is often your storefront. Leaving messages unanswered is like ignoring a customer at the door.
Why This Hurts Your Business
- Lost Sales: If people can’t reach you, they’ll move on to someone they can.
- Damaged Reputation: Word gets around quickly in small communities. Poor communication can hurt your brand.
- Missed Opportunities: You never know who’s reaching out—a new customer, a collaborator, or the media.
Simple Steps to Improve Your Online Presence
- Update Your Profile: Make sure your contact details are front and center. Include a phone number, email, and location. If you have a website or WhatsApp, add that too.
- Check Your Messages Daily: Even a short reply lets people know you care.
- Use Auto-Replies: If you can’t respond right away, set up an automated message acknowledging receipt and when you’ll reply.
- Be Human: Friendly, timely responses turn curious browsers into loyal customers.
Let’s Raise the Bar
Our local businesses have so much to offer, but a little extra attention to communication can make all the difference. Let’s make it easy for people to connect, buy, and spread the word about the amazing things being made right here in our community.
